Finnegan's Sting Vespa Hornets at Confederation
Park- E.K. Men's Baseball Action in Cranbrook
On May 4th, 1939, in his first-ever at-bat in the city of
Detroit, rookie Ted Williams becomes the first player to hit
a homer which totally clears the right field seats at Briggs
Stadium.
On May 4th, 2007, the Kimberly Vespa Hornets starting pitcher,
Mike Reid, made a mistake in the bottom of the second inning
and hung a breaking pitch to Finnegan's Wakes second baseman,
Richard Nelson. Nelson put a charge into the ball and it left
the yard in a hurry on a rope. The blast was the hi-lite of
a 4 RBI night for Nelson as this screaming 2-run homer was
followed by a sharp, 2-RBI single in the 5th off Vespa Hornet's
hard-throwing reliever, Patrick L'Hereux. Nelson complimented
his offensive display with a heads-up tag off a worm-burner
of a ground ball catching the speedy Mike Hoglund going to
second on the hit.
Hall of fame pitcher, Warren Spahn, once said, "Hitting
is timing. Pitching is upsetting timing." Finnegan's
Jesse Yoshinaka took a page out of Spahn's book as he pitched
a complete game 15-6 victory keeping Kimberly batters off
balance with a baffling selection of fastballs and off-speed
breaking pitches.
Offensive hi-lites for Finnegan's, besides Nelson's blast
in the second, saw John Facey and Joel Kaiser hitting hard
line-drive singles off L'Hereux and Eric Yeo smashing a solid
liner off starter, Reid in the 3rd.
The Vespa Hornets answered with Trevor Lundy lining a sharp
single up the middle in the top of the second to spark a 4-run
outburst by the visitors. Fraser Armstrong singled in two
more Hornet runs to cap a 4-run second inning. Spencer Hornoi
followed suit with an RBI single in the 6th to plate another
Kimberly runner.
The defensive hi-lite of the game was a diving snag by Vespa
Hornets' third baseman, John Brace, off a screaming line drive
by Finnegan's Jeff Kirkhope that had double written all over
it. Solid "D" was also turned in by Lundy at two
bag, Reid at first and Chlopan behind the plate.
Anchoring a solid Finnegan's defensive was Kirkhope at first,
Facey at third and a wall in the outfield in the form of Gerrid
Lemire, Joel Kaiser and Jesse Northey.
Finnegan's manager, Jaymee Kitchenham, was very pleased with
the club's second consecutive solid effort and their 2 and
0 start to the season. They are awaiting the return of pitcher
Collin Wallace and expectations are high for a continuation
of their winning ways.
Next action sees the Kimberly Vespa Hornets returning to
Cranbrook on Tuesday, May 8th, to face the Cranbrook Eagles.
Game time is 6:30 at Confederation Park. In the meantime,
